The Role of AI in Supporting Diverse Learning Needs in Higher Education

As educational institutions strive to create inclusive environments that cater to diverse learning needs, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as a pivotal factor in enhancing educational access and success.AI technologies, particularly advanced tools like ChatGPT, have the potential to transform how students with varying abilities and learning styles engage with course materials. This paper explores the multifaceted applications of AI in higher education, emphasizing its capacity to support students with diverse learning requirements, including those with disabilities, language barriers, and different cognitive styles. The integration of AI tools can facilitate personalized learning experiences by providing tailored resources, adaptive assessments, and real-time feedback, thereby promoting equity in educational opportunities. For instance, AIpowered platforms can analyze individual learning patterns and preferences, allowing for the customization of content delivery to suit each student's unique needs.Additionally, these technologies can enhance communication for non-native speakers through translation services and simplify complex concepts through conversational interfaces, such as those offered by ChatGPT.Given the novelty of these technologies, the current body of literature on their application in higher education remains limited. To address this gap, we conducted a comprehensive review of available grey literature, focusing on case studies and preliminary research exploring the implications of AI for diverse learners in higher education settings. Our findings highlight several challenges associated with the implementation of AI, including issues of accessibility, equity in technology distribution, and potential biases in AI algorithms that could inadvertently disadvantage certain student groups.Conversely, we identified several opportunities presented by the integration of AI, such as the ability to scale personalized learning interventions, facilitate inclusive pedagogical practices, and enhance student engagement through interactive and adaptive learning environments. The primary contribution of this position paper is the formulation of a strategic framework outlining how higher education institutions can effectively integrate AI tools, like ChatGPT, to support diverse learning needs. We propose specific recommendations for four key areas of focus: curriculum design, pedagogical approaches, student support services, and faculty training.By emphasizing the transformative potential of AI in creating an inclusive educational landscape, this paper aims to stimulate further discussion and research on the role of AI in supporting diverse learners within higher education contexts.
