Maritime Trends in IMO Speeches: Keyword Analysis and Collocation
This study investigates the evolving priorities in the International Maritime Organization (IMO) by analyzing the speeches of its Secretary-Generals over three distinct periods: 2010-2014, 2015-2019, and 2020-2023. The primary aim is to trace the thematic shifts within these speeches, highlighting the transition from traditional concerns such as safety and regulation to contemporary issues such as sustainability, health, and environmental protection. These shifts reflect broader global trends, including the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Using keyword and collocation analysis, this research identifies key themes and examines how they have been framed over time. The findings reveal a growing emphasis on environmental issues, particularly carbon neutrality, and an increased focus on the health and safety of maritime workers, especially during the recent global pandemic. This study emphasizes the dynamic nature of maritime governance and provides valuable insights for future maritime policy and regulation. (Korea Maritime and Ocean University)
