Exploring the Potential of Ayurveda in Managing Chronic Kidney Disease: A Case Study

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing concern worldwide. This study explores the potential of Ayurveda, a traditional Indian medical system, in managing CKD.Ayurveda offers a holistic approach that may help control CKD progression and improve patient well-being when implemented early alongside dietary adjustments and lifestyle changes.Current conventional treatments for CKD often have limitations, leading many to seek complementary therapies. In Ayurveda, CKD can be compared to certain subtypes of "Mutraghata," for which various treatment strategies are documented in classical Ayurvedic texts.Case Presentation: A 37-year-old woman diagnosed with Stage 3 CKD (determined by estimated glomerular filtration rate) presented with symptoms like fatigue, shortness of breath, and foot swelling. She had a history of anemia requiring blood transfusions every six months for the previous year and a half.Ayurvedic Intervention: The patient underwent a multi-phased treatment plan with customized herbal formulations like Bruhatyadi decoction, Punarnavamandoora, and dietary modifications excluding milk products, specific vegetables (cabbage, spinach, eggplant), and emphasizing the importance of responding to natural urges.Outcomes: The patient experienced positive results, including increased hemoglobin (Hb) and decreased creatinine levels, eliminating the need for further blood transfusions. This case study suggests that Ayurveda may offer a valuable approach for managing CKD, although further research is warranted.
