Focusing Properties of a Cylindrical Lens Formed by a Photonic Crystal Composed by Hollow Metal Cylinders

Two mathematical models, algorithms, and software have been developed to study the diffraction of an electromagnetic wave on a cylinder made of artificial magnetodielectric, which is a photonic crystal made of hollow metal cylinders. In the first model, based on the calculation of a 3d photonic crystal, equivalent anisotropic electric and magnetic constants were obtained and used. The near field of a cylindrical magnetodielectric lens with these parameters is investigated. In the second model, the problem of diffraction on a large (several thousand) number of metal cylinders is directly solved. This solution is applied to the calculation of a real cylindrical lens. Comparison of the results obtained by the two methods shows that the accuracy of the calculation of focusing devices made of photonic crystals on the basis of an approximate first model is sufficient for practice.
