Numerical Simulation of a Sheet–Beam W-band Traveling-Wave Tube with a Double-Grating Slow-Wave Structure

Development of miniature vacuum amplifiers and oscillators operating at millimeter and submillimeter frequency bands is one of the prior tasks of modern vacuum electronics. Traveling-wave tube (TWT) is a promising device since it can provide wideband gain and high output power. In this paper, the results of development of a miniature W-band TWT with a sheet electron beam and staggered double-grating slow wave structure (SWS) are presented. The results of simulation of high-frequency parameters of the SWS are presented. The SWS was designed to achieve synchronism with a 14–15 kV sheet electron beam. Simulation of beam-wave interaction predicts gain higher than 25 dB and output power up to 65 W at beam current of 0.1 A. The results of development of a vacuum window are also presented.
