A Study of Middle School Music Teacher's Perception on the Use of Media in Music Classes

Objectives The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the types of perceptions that middle school music teachers have regarding media use in music classes prior to the implementation of the revised 2022 music curriculum. Methods From 104 statements obtained through the analysis of the revised 2022 music education curriculum and in-depth interviews, a total of 41 Q-sample items were constructed. Twenty middle school music teachers were selected as the P-sample, and Q-sorting was conducted. The analysis was performed using the QUANL Program. Results The types of perceptions teachers have regarding media use in middle school music classes have been classified into three categories. The first is the traditional media use type, which prioritizes selecting performance media that have a significant role in the lessons. The second is the balanced media use type, which values the use of appropriate media for balanced learning activities and elements across different areas. The third is the open media use type, characterized by seeking changes in lessons considering the interests of the learners. Conclusions The value of this study lies in its analysis of teachers' subjective thoughts regarding the use of media in music classes. It is hoped that the findings will serve as foundational data to support the development of teachers' expertise in the use of instructional media.
