A Study on the Implementation of ChatGPT in University Settings: Exploring the Experiences of Learners and Instructors
The study aims to explore ChatGPT's future role in university writing education and propose teaching strategies by analyzing the perceptions of instructors and learners in courses utilizing ChatGPT. Three instructors developed and analyzed a Chat-GPT-based writing course by conducting thematic interviews with six students. The results of the interview analysis are as follows: First, ChatGPT served as a tool not only to assist learners' activities but also to provide assistance in cognitive and metacognitive strategy development. Second, instructors found it challenging to provide timely and effective scaffolding in ChatGPT-based classes. Third, learners showed differences in their use of ChatGPT between individual and group activities, and it was particularly noted that ChatGPT facilitated learner engagement and had a positive impact during group activities. Recommendations include tailored scaffolding strategies for different learning activities and timely support strategies for instructors, focusing on ChatGPT's interaction with both learners and instructors
