DECENTRALIZED PYROLYSIS-BASED WASTE VALORIZATION FOR CARBON CAPTURE: TECHNOLOGICAL BREAKTHROUGHS AND MARKET READINESS OF PYROCHAR SOLUTIONS IN INDIA
India's growing municipal solid waste (MSW) crisis and lack of integrated carbon capture solutions present significant environmental and public health challenges. Pyrochar Solutions has developed a decentralized, high-efficiency pyrolysis system that transforms heterogeneous waste-including plastics, biomass, and organic residues-into commercially viable products such as biooil, biochar, and industrial waxes. This system incorporates microbial pre-treatment and AI-driven process optimization to enhance feedstock homogeneity, increase carbon retention, and reduce external energy requirements. Pilot installations at IIT Delhi and the Okhla Landfill demonstrated up to 80% waste mass reduction and carbon retention exceeding 70% in biochar, significantly lowering CO₂ and CH₄ emissions. GC-MS analysis of pyrolysis products confirmed high-purity hydrocarbon chains in bio-oil (C9–C17) suitable for fuel blending, and in wax (C12–C21) suitable for industrial applications. The technology's modular design enables flexible deployment in peri-urban and rural areas, reducing landfill dependency and environmental injustice. Economically, the system achieves a projected ROI within 3–4 years and 30% EBITDA margins, supported by revenue from multiple by-products. By integrating waste-to-energy conversion with carbon capture and utilization (CCU), Pyrochar's solution supports circular economy models and contributes to India's climate mitigation and sustainability goals. This paper presents the technical validation, environmental benefits, and commercialization pathway of Pyrochar Solutions' innovation, highlighting its potential as a scalable model for sustainable waste management and carbon stabilization in emerging economies. This is the representation of the pyrolysis process, illustrating influence of feedstock properties and operational parameters on the yield and quality of pyrolysis products. Key inputs such as particle size, moisture, and composition affect the pyrolysis reactor's performance, which in turn governs the characteristics of char, bio-oil, and bio-gas. This diagram contextualizes the thermal conversion pathway used in Pyrochar Solution waste valorization system. Highlights Ÿ Pyrolysis system with microbial-assisted feedstock treatment yields 80% MSW reduction. Ÿ Bio-oil (C9–C17 hydrocarbons) and wax (C12–C21 hydrocarbons) validated via GC-MS. Ÿ Achieves up to 70% carbon retention in biochar for long-term sequestration. Ÿ Modular reactor design enables decentralized deployment across rural and urban India. Ÿ 3–4 year ROI with 30% EBITDA margin demonstrates strong market scalability.
