Nam Taebo's imagery as provincial ministers through the reading of poetry and prose

This article focuses on Nam Tae-bo(1694~1773), who achieved outstanding achievements as a village official in the late Joseon Dynasty in the 18th century. During his two terms as a village governor, he served the people well, and he compiled the “赤羅誌” and the “金馬志”, which summarised the culture and history of the region. The content of the thesis firstly details the life of Nam Taebo, and then analyses the content of his poetry to identify his view of the pastoralist as a shunli. It is hoped that this paper will highlight his contribution to the development of the diversity and uniqueness of local culture. Nam Tae Bo passed the first past examination at the late age of 42, but failed the second past examination. As a result, he was granted a tutelage in recognition of his ancestors' merits and began his tutelage at the age of 51. He then served in the central government for four years, and from the age of 55, he served with distinction as a village governor for 10 years. From the age of 66 to 80, he spent his old age in his hometown of Yangpyeong, where he received constant honours from the ruler. During his time as prefect of Gunwei, Nam Tae-bo was a minister who guided his people with his own sophistication and gentle disposition, and during his time as county governor of Iksan, he was a minister who elicited the co-operation of his people with his ability and integrity. The contents of the monument to Maae, which remains in Gungwi, Gyeongsangbuk-do, were in line with Nam Tae-bo's achievements, and the monument was in a form that suited the difficult economic conditions of the people in the mountain villages of Gungwi. In addition, Shin Kwang-soo's “金馬別歌”, which states that the people of Iksan made a road, climbed to the top of Mt. Mireuksan, and sent Nam Tae-bo with tears, must have been the actual situation. The relative stability and development of Joseon society in the 18th century under the reign of King Yeongjo was made possible by the fact that outstanding ministers like Nam Taebo supported the local village society, which was the foundation of the state system.
