Acoustic emission analysis of seizure transition process between steel journals and aluminum alloy plain bearings
Seizure tests were conducted using a bearing tester to elucidate the mechanism of seizure occurring between aluminum alloy (Al-Sn-Si) plain bearings widely used in gasoline engines and steel journals. Differences in torque spikes that occurred before seizure and final seizure were determined by analyzing the sliding surfaces and cross sections and the acoustic emission signal. The results revealed that the occurrence of final seizure was affected by the melting out and depletion of tin in the bearing alloy, plastic deformation due to frictional heat, and expansion of the aluminum adhesion zone caused by these factors.
