Collaborative treatment of bone injury with water/acid-reactive nanomotors and photothermal effects

We demonstrate the successful fabrication of a biocompatible nanomotor system for the active delivery of Mg2+/H2 and the promotion of bone fracture healing associated with photothermal effects <i>in vivo</i>. Mg is introduced onto one side of the surface of the single-walled carbon nanotube, functioning as a trigger for the controlled release of Mg2+/H2 by the microenvironment <i>in situ</i>. The asymmetrical release of H2 is not only the active component that improves the bone repair capability via Mg2+/photothermal effects but also the propellant for the motion of the nanomotor. After accumulating at the bone fracture site, the motion of nanomotors can be activated by water/acid, and the active motion further results in enhanced diffusion of Mg2+, leading to active therapy for bone injuries with photothermal effects.
