“Kamarinskaya” by M. Glinka and Concerto for Gusli by V. Bibergan: the life of traditions
An important quality or Russian culture is the significant role of traditions. This also applies to academic music. The influence of one composition on another can be established using structural analysis. This article explores the stylistic connection between M.I. Glinka’s “Kamarinskaya” and V.D. Bibergan’s Concerto for gusli and Russian folk orchestra. Despite the obvious differences, compositional connections between the works have been identified. These include: reliance on folklore, variation as the leading type of material development, textural features and timbre dramaturgy. The role of repetitions and modulations is also considered.
