Mathematical Modeling of Biomass and Carotenoid Accumulation in Microalgae

The paper investigates mathematical models of the balance of carotenoid accumulation and biomass of the microalgae Desmodesmus armatus population under the multidirectional action of substrates, in particular, activating, which promotes biomass growth, and inhibiting, which suppresses biomass accumulation but accelerates carotenoid biosynthesis. The models of Pert, Andrews, and Bergter were used as a basis and adapted to the available experimental data. To simulate the dynamics of carotenoid biosynthesis processes, a software application has been developed with a user interface that allows tracing changes in the dynamics of the mathematical model’s behavior when any of the parameters are changed, such as the initial amount of biomass, substrate, etc. One of the key features of the application is the set of convenient tools for analyzing and visualizing the results obtained which allow users to adjust the parameters of the bioprocess and monitor its dynamics in real time.
