This paper presents a comprehensive knowledge mapping and in-depth analysis of the social media security research to understand better global trends in this field that emerged between 2009 and 2023. The analysis is based on an investigation of 2947 research articles indexed in the Web of Science. The knowledge mapping based on CiteSpace 6.3.R1 presents the current research status, which contains the analysis of the collaboration network, co-citation network, references with citation bursts keyword and cluster analysis. The study reveals the distribution of articles by country, top publishing institutions, influential authors, co-cited authors, and keyword trends over time. Furthermore, it identifies 13 distinct clusters of co-cited references, each representing a significant concentration of research within the field. This paper contributes to understanding the evolution of social media security research and identifying emerging trends, providing valuable insights for researchers and practitioners in the field.
