Active Frequency-Dependent GER Fluid Damper With a Composite Mode of Cut and Flow

Advancements in damper technology have significantly contributed to enhanced vibrational suppression and stability, which holds immense potential for precision industrial measurement applications. In this article, a working mode for fluid dampers is introduced, referred to as the “cut mode,” which builds upon conventional modes. This innovative approach leverages the advantages of various modes to achieve a substantial improvement in damping efficiency. The mathematical modeling of the cut mode, drawing upon the particle-level chain formation and breaking mechanisms, is subsequently further delved into. Furthermore, a damper incorporating a composite mode that combines the cut and flow modes is designed, manufactured, and tested. This damper employs giant electrorheological (GER) fluid, a modified product of electrorheological fluid. Notably, the findings reveal a remarkable regulation factor of 16.51 at the peak damping force, which outperforms the conventional modes, as the damper transitions from the null state to the applied electric field state. In addition, to validate its mechanical and vibrational suppression properties under vibrational excitation, both numerical and experimental analyses have been conducted, with a focus on its mechanical properties and vibrational suppression capabilities under varying excitation frequencies. By incorporating a frequency evaluation algorithm, the results conclusively demonstrate that the proposed GER fluid damper effectively reduces the peak vibrational transmissibility by nearly 10 dB, indicating exceptional performance. This outstanding achievement positions it as a promising candidate for various engineering applications.
