Mitigation Techniques for Error Reduction in Doppler Measurements of Wearable GNSS Receivers

Samsung Electronics System LSI is striving to provide high positioning performance to smart watch users, even in challenging environments. One factor affecting the positioning performance of smart watch is the error in DR (Doppler) measurements caused by arm swings. This study proposes DR averaging to mitigate the arm swing effect. DR averaging is a technique that measures Doppler, which is usually measured at 1Hz, at 10Hz and averages the measurements to reduce the periodic arm swing effect. To verify this method, experiments were conducted in various environments from open sky to urban canyon. The results showed that the standard deviation of DR measurements decreased by up to 38%, confirming that the arm swing effect is mitigated in the measurement domain. In the navigation domain, the velocity error improved by up to 30% in all environments, and the position error improved by up to 28% in urban areas. These results demonstrate that the DR averaging method improves the positioning performance of smart watch users.
