Measuring Gravitational Acceleration Using X-Ray Pulsars for Deep Space Navigation Algorithm Initialization

A method for measuring gravitational acceleration using x-ray pulsars is presented. Using a Maximum Likelihood Estimator, x-ray photon arrival times are processed to generate position, velocity and acceleration measurements. This method is validated in simulation. To determine how well this estimator can perform, a Cramer-Rao lower bound analysis is presented.

Abstract

A method for measuring gravitational acceleration using x-ray pulsars is presented. Using a Maximum Likelihood Estimator, x-ray photon arrival times are processed to generate position, velocity and acceleration measurements. This method is validated in simulation. To determine how well this estimator can perform, a Cramer-Rao lower bound analysis is presented.
