Monitoring and Advanced Performance Assessment for SBAS

The evolution of Satellite-Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS) represents a major advancement in civil aviation navigation, meeting the precision and safety requirements from En-route operations to LPV-200 precision approaches. Current L1 SBAS systems enhance user accuracy and integrity by monitoring and augmenting GPS satellites and the ionosphere over specific regions. With the deployment of the Galileo constellation and the introduction soon of the L5 signal, SBAS services will soon shift towards Dual Frequency Multi Constellation (DFMC) systems. This evolution will allow users to leverage satellites from GPS, Galileo, GLONASS, and BeiDou constellations while eliminating the need for ionospheric corrections. SBAS has established a strong global presence, demonstrated by the operational deployments of WAAS in the United States, EGNOS in Europe, GAGAN in India, KASS in Korea, and MSAS in Japan. Additional initiatives are underway in regions like Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, China, Russia, and Africa, further underscoring the expanding role of SBAS in enhancing aviation safety and efficiency. The increasing complexity of SBASs has created a pressing need for advanced monitoring and performance assessment solutions. GMV's MagicMonitor platform addresses this challenge by providing an all-in-one solution for computing performance at both pseudorange and user levels, as well as monitoring SBAS and non-SBAS services. It supports L1 and DFMC SBAS technologies, providing critical insights across all phases of system development and operation. MagicMonitor offers automated real-time monitoring, detailed post-processing analysis reporting, key performance indicators (KPI) evaluation and intuitive visualization, all at GNSS Reference Stations and across Service Areas. This paper details the platform’s architecture, capabilities, and real-world applications, demonstrating its value in key projects such as SouthPAN and UKSBAS. By integrating advanced GNSS algorithmic tools and flexible modular components, MagicMonitor simplifies the complex task of SBAS system evaluation, offering critical insights that enhance aviation safety and system reliability.
