Correlation Between Closed-cup and Open Cup Flash Point for the Prediction of Fire Point

This study aims to analyze the correlation between Closed-cup and Open Cup flash point of organic compounds, develop the model to predict Open Cup flash point from Closed-cup flash point, and further predict fire point from Open Cup flash point. In this study, a total of 130 flash point data of organic compounds were used to model the relationship between Closed-cup and Open Cup flash point through linear and nonlinear regression analysis. The study proposed formulas for predicting Open Cup flash point for various compound groups, including hydrocarbons, alcohols, and acids, and compared the results with the existing model provided by the Factory Mutual Engineering Corporation. Additionally, the model for predicting fire point using Open Cup flash point was suggested and compared with the Jones method. These models are expected to contribute to safety assessments during the handling of chemical substances and play a crucial role in preventing fire and explosion accidents.
