A Study on the New Meaning Generation Structure in Performance Adaptation - Focusing on the meaning inference of the relevance theory

This study attempted to understand the principle by structurally approaching the adaptation that appears as a phenomenon today. Previous researches on adaptation have put more weight on individual cases than on the common structure. This study can be an attempt to understand the adaptation anew. As the first step, this research defines the adaptation as the process by which the meaning of the original is converted or created into a new meaning. The focus is particularly on the process of creating a new meaning as the original work is adapted into a performance. The process of generating a new meaning in the performance adaptation is approached by applying the semantic inference process of the relevance theory. As a result, the structure in which a new meaning is created in the adaptation was verified through the interaction between the explicature as the adaptor's interpretation and the implicit premise as context. In order to reconfirm this result in the performance adaptation, the meaning generation structure of each performance is analyzed by applying it to four performances adapted from the Korean myth of ‘Woncheongangbonpuri’. It can be induced that all adapted performances are creating new meanings by the interaction between the adaptor's subjective perspective and contemporary context. In addition, in the course of the research, the categories of the context of a wide range of performance adaptations were reset to ‘personal elements’, ‘background elements’, ‘production environment’, ‘genre’, and ‘objects for acceptance’. And this researcher expect the categories can be used efficiently in the practical process. In addition, the achievement of this study would be that a new attempt was made to analyze performances using an inferential approach instead of a semiotic approach.
