Single radius spherical cap discrepancy on compact two-point homogeneous spaces
Abstract In this note we study estimates from below of the single radius spherical discrepancy in the setting of compact two-point homogeneous spaces. Namely, given a d -dimensional manifold $$\mathcal {M}$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mi>M</mml:mi> </mml:math> endowed with a distance $$\rho $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mi>ρ</mml:mi> </mml:math> so that $$(\mathcal {M}, \rho )$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>(</mml:mo> <mml:mi>M</mml:mi> <mml:mo>,</mml:mo> <mml:mi>ρ</mml:mi> <mml:mo>)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> is a two-point homogeneous space and with the Riemannian measure $$\mu $$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mi>μ</mml:mi> </mml:math> , we provide conditions on r such that if $$D_r$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>D</mml:mi> <mml:mi>r</mml:mi> </mml:msub> </mml:math> denotes the discrepancy of the ball of radius r , then, for an absolute constant $$C>0$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>C</mml:mi> <mml:mo>></mml:mo> <mml:mn>0</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> and for every set of points $$\{x_j\}_{j=1}^N$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:msubsup> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>{</mml:mo> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>x</mml:mi> <mml:mi>j</mml:mi> </mml:msub> <mml:mo>}</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>j</mml:mi> <mml:mo>=</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> </mml:mrow> <mml:mi>N</mml:mi> </mml:msubsup> </mml:math> , one has $$\int _{\mathcal {M}} |D_{r}(x)|^2\, d\mu (x)\geqslant C N^{-1-\frac{1}{d}}$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:msub> <mml:mo>∫</mml:mo> <mml:mi>M</mml:mi> </mml:msub> <mml:msup> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>|</mml:mo> <mml:msub> <mml:mi>D</mml:mi> <mml:mi>r</mml:mi> </mml:msub> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>(</mml:mo> <mml:mi>x</mml:mi> <mml:mo>)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:mo>|</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:mn>2</mml:mn> </mml:msup> <mml:mspace/> <mml:mi>d</mml:mi> <mml:mi>μ</mml:mi> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>(</mml:mo> <mml:mi>x</mml:mi> <mml:mo>)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> <mml:mo>⩾</mml:mo> <mml:mi>C</mml:mi> <mml:msup> <mml:mi>N</mml:mi> <mml:mrow> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> <mml:mo>-</mml:mo> <mml:mfrac> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> <mml:mi>d</mml:mi> </mml:mfrac> </mml:mrow> </mml:msup> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> . The conditions on r that we have depend on the dimension d of the manifold and cannot be achieved when $$d \equiv 1 \ ( {\text {mod}}4)$$ <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> <mml:mrow> <mml:mi>d</mml:mi> <mml:mo>≡</mml:mo> <mml:mn>1</mml:mn> <mml:mspace/> <mml:mo>(</mml:mo> <mml:mtext>mod</mml:mtext> <mml:mn>4</mml:mn> <mml:mo>)</mml:mo> </mml:mrow> </mml:math> . Nonetheless, we prove a weaker estimate for such dimensions as well.
