Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic condition that affects millions of people worldwide. In this context, the importance of a proper diet is crucial for managing this disease. The main objective of this research was to analyze the importance of functional foods in the management of type 2 diabetes, focusing on how these foods can contribute to glycemic control and improve the quality of life for patients. The research was conducted through a literature review covering the period from 2014 to 2024. The consulted databases included Scielo, Google Scholar, and Lilacs, analyzing recent studies on the effects of functional foods on type 2 diabetes, focusing on their bioactive compounds. The findings indicate that many functional foods possess properties that help modulate the glycemic response, as well as reduce the risk of complications associated with diabetes. Including these foods in the diet can promote healthier eating habits. The results of this research highlight the importance of functional foods as a valuable strategy in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus.
