Advances in microbial bioconversion of methanol

<p indent="0mm">Methanol bioconversion represents a critical approach for addressing the global climate crisis and achieving sustainable low-carbon production. However, microorganisms encounter significant challenges under methanol metabolism, including biological toxicity, low methanol tolerance, and tight metabolic adaptation, resulting in reduced cell growth and chemical production. This review provides an overview of recent advancements in engineering microbial conversion of methanol, with a particular emphasis on reconstructing and designing of metabolic pathways in both natural and synthetic methylotrophs. It also discussed rational redesign and adaptive evolution strategies in regulating methanol metabolism, alongside the current state of methanol fermentation processes. Finally, we discussed the current challenges of methanol bioconversion and put forward the future direction for the industrialization of methanol bioconversion.
