An Effective RCS Reconstruction Technique Based on Root-MUSIC Algorithm

Target radar cross-section (RCS) reconstruction is an effective means of compressing target echo data. Most current studies based on the geometrical theory of diffraction model can only perform RCS reconstruction for targets with a known number of scattering centers. It is also difficult to estimate the locations of the scattering centers accurately, resulting in poor reconstruction accuracy. In this letter, an effective RCS reconstruction method using the root-MUSIC technique is proposed. We apply the Gershgorin disk estimator to estimate the number of scattering centers to achieve the RCS reconstruction for noncooperative targets. Then, the root-MUSIC algorithm is employed to estimate the locations of scattering centers to improve the reconstruction accuracy. Finally, an orthogonal method is used to determine the scattering type, and the least square technique is utilized to calculate the amplitude of each scattering center. The proposed method can accurately extract the locations and amplitudes of scattering centers of targets. We quantitatively compared the reconstruction accuracy of existing work and the proposed method using two radar targets. The results show that the proposed method can achieve more accurate RCS reconstruction with a high data compression ratio.
