The life and writing activities of Yu Yu-heon(由由軒) Namgyeop(南礏)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the life of Yu Yu-heon Nam-geup (1592-1671) and reveal the value of his writings. The southern class was from the Yeongyangnam clan and lived in Andong. He was a writer named Jeong Gyeong-se(鄭經世, 1563-1633), who was Woobok(愚伏), and associated with local Toegye writers. He left behind various types of writings, including 「Byeong Jeong Diary」 in the collection of works Yuyuheonyugo(由由軒遺稿). Nam Geup has not yet been specifically mentioned in the history of Chinese literature, but he is known as the person who wrote “Soldier’s Diary.” Although Nam gyeong’s writings are not extensive, they are very valuable and meaningful to study in that they not only allow us to understand the era of the Manchu War, but also examine the intellectuals’ perception of the era regarding the war. Namgyeop was the servant of King Injo at Namhansanseong Fortress during the Manchu War of 1636 as Saongwon volunteer. He wrote the “Soldier’s Diary” by recording what happened in the castle at the time. 「Byeong-Jeong Diary」 vividly records the experience of watching King Injo as a close relative. The data recorded by date has great research value because it contains detailed descriptions of the ever-changing battlefield, battle situation, and information on weapons, rather than simple expressions of loyalty and stereotypical content revealing hostility toward the Qing. In addition, we can examine the situation of the time and his perception of reality in the 70 or so poems he left behind. The stability of his life as a bureaucrat was guaranteed as a public servant to King Hojong, but after witnessing the turbulence of his career as a government official and feeling responsible for the war as a state official, he resigned and went to Andong. He did not show the usual behavior of training younger students in rural areas or spending time taking refuge in nature. Although he himself stated that it was to provide stable production, he actually conducted practical research to stabilize the lives of people facing difficulties due to war, and that was sericulture. Although he was illiterate in this field, he sought advice from existing data on sericulture and old farmers in the Andong region, and wrote Jammongyoeo(蠶農要語) in an effort to find a suitable technology for sericulture in the region. Jamnongyoeo is considered to be a book that summarizes the core techniques of sericulture, but the text has not been passed down and only the book remains. Through the preface, we can understand the thoughts of the southern class, which contains a practical consciousness to improve the lives of the people and recover from the damage caused by the war.
