Numerical modelling of large displacement shear in soil-structure interaction

This paper presents a numerical modelling of a large displacement shear test, aimed at describing the residual behaviour at the soil-structure interface. The numerical simulations are performed using finite element analysis, specifically with the Plaxis calculation code, which is widely recognized for its accuracy in geotechnical modelling. The behaviour of the soil is simulated through an elastoplastic model based on the Mohr-Coulomb criterion, ensuring that the mechanical properties of the soil are accurately captured. The shear along the soil-structure interface at large displacements is modelled through the interaction between the soil and a structural plate, covering a considerable length to accurately reach the residual state. The results of the numerical simulations are compared with existing studies in the literature, and this comparison confirms both the reliability and accuracy of the adopted modelling approach. Additionally, a parametric study is conducted to examine in detail the influence of normal stress and interface roughness on the shear mode and friction coefficient. This analysis provides valuable insights into the factors that affect the soil-structure interaction, making this study highly relevant for practical engineering applications.
