‘F-1 Pit crew’ multidisciplinary theatre team emergency front-of-neck access training programme
Introduction: Emergency surgical cricothyroidotomy (SCT) is rarely performed and often associated with a poor outcome.1 The need for improvements in both SCT and human factors training has been proposed, with F-1 motor racing pit crews as the paradigm. Since 2016, the anaesthetic department at Liverpool Head and Neck Centre (LHNC) has delivered a biannual package of multidisciplinary team (MDT) ‘can’t intubate can’t oxygenate’ (CICO)/SCT training informed by sports psychology, which we believe meets this aspiration.
