Impact of introduction of point-of-care viscoelastic testing on transfusion practice in major obstetric haemorrhage
Introduction: Previous audit of blood product transfusion in major obstetric haemorrhage (MOH) highlighted both potentially unnecessary fresh frozen plasma (FFP) transfusion and lack of cryoprecipitate transfusion where fibrinogen <2 g L–1 as a result of delay in conventional coagulation (CC) test results. Point-of-care viscoelastic testing such as rotational thromboelastometry (ROTEM) has been shown to offer a broader evaluation of haemostatic function, allowing a more targeted approach of blood product transfusion, including in the obstetric population.
