Triple-Band WDM Transmission Beyond 100-Tb/s Capacity With 1-Tb/s/λ-Class Digital Coherent Channels

Ultra-wideband wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technologies are essential to dramatically increase the capacity of single mode fiber (SMF) and have recently demonstrated transmission at more than 100 to 400 Tb/s. High-symbol-rate technologies with high-order modulation formats are also effective in accommodating next-generation client signals such as high-speed 800-Gb and 1.6-Tb Ethernet and more. Therefore, the combination of ultra-wideband technologies with high-symbol-rate digital coherent channels must be targeted for research and development. This paper reviews the trends in ultra-wideband WDM transmission beyond a 100-Tb/s capacity. We also introduce our research results on triple-band WDM transmission beyond this capacity using real-time optical transponders and 1-Tb/s-class high-symbol-rate digital coherent channels.
