Propagation and performance analysis of 5G communications in maritime environments

The increasing demands for ubiquitous wireless communications has led to multiple new communication scenarios, such as satellite links, maritime networks and Massive Machine-Type Communications. In this work, we investigate the use of 5G New Radio (NR) radio access networks for maritime communication networks. More specifically, this paper aims at evaluating 5G capabilities in maritime environments by investigating the propagation mechanisms that predominate in over-the-sea channels.

Abstract

The increasing demands for ubiquitous wireless communications has led to multiple new communication scenarios, such as satellite links, maritime networks and Massive Machine-Type Communications. In this work, we investigate the use of 5G New Radio (NR) radio access networks for maritime communication networks. More specifically, this paper aims at evaluating 5G capabilities in maritime environments by investigating the propagation mechanisms that predominate in over-the-sea channels.
