Fast Analysis of Scattering from Parallel Cylinders in the presence of Perfect Electric Conductors

Scattering by a set of arbitrary cylinders in inhomogeneous scenarios represents an electromagnetic canonical problem. In particular, we consider herein the presence of Perfect Electric Conductors (PEC) bounding the region of electromagnetic wave propagation. This scenario covers a wide range of electromagnetic devices, including Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces, metagratings [1], and (in a parallel plate waveguide technology) lens antennas [2]. Interestingly, for planar PEC surfaces, an efficient analytical tool can be developed based on the extension of the scattering matrix method proposed in [3] for cylinders in free space. Notably, differently from recent contributions [2], [4], the proposed analysis tool also can consider dielectric and extended scatterers (including eventually non canonical shapes) in order to realize the desired functionalities. Additionally, this tool is adaptable also to cases where the set of cylinders is positioned within free space bounded by dihedral corners, which could be a situation of interest for antenna applications [5].
