Performance Improvement of 5G Metasurface Antennas
In this paper, Epsilon-negative (ENG) metasurfaces and their application in enhancing antenna performance for 5G applications are discussed. The detailed design of a unit cell operating at 26GHz is provided and verified via numerical simulations. The proposed unit cell is then implemented to form a metasurface antenna with a circularly polarized radiating patch. By focusing on the S-parameters and permittivity of the ENG metasurface, significant improvements in gain and beamforming capabilities are achieved. Furthermore, enhancements in antenna performance, particularly in terms of efficiency and directive properties, are studied. The analysis reveals that the suggested design empowers the antenna to attain wide-bandwidth capabilities by employing a single metasurface layer. This configuration is distinguished by its low profile and circular polarization, rendering it well-suited for 5G millimeter-wave systems and conducive to MIMO applications.
