Enhancing Pavement Integrity Assessment: The Role of Ultra-Wideband Horn Antennas in Ground Penetrating Radar Applications
This study explores the use of ultra-wideband TEM horn antennas for non-destructive Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) evaluation of road pavements. By integrating antennas tuned to 2.7 GHz within the regulatory spectrum, we demonstrate enhanced resolution and penetration in pavement assessments. Employing CST Microwave Studio for simulations and applying empirical models for material properties, we reveal how GPR can effectively identify subsurface defects. Results from Fast Fourier Transform analyses on signal interactions with and without pavement irregularities underline the antennas’ diagnostic precision, offering a promising direction for preventive road infrastructure maintenance.
