Feasibility study of XLA very light space-borne orientable antenna for telecommunication applications
In the past, many proposals for extremely large (XLA) inflatable antennas have been studied although only the ECHO I satellite has been lunched as late as the sixties, indeed the difficulty is efficiently orienting such very light and delicate structures in space. Further progress has been made with the projects ESA/NASA QUASAT in 1980s, the ARISE in 2005 and the Russian SPEKTR-R in 2011 [1]. However, XLA, having a diameter of 30 m or more, cannot be built with rigid structures like SPEKTR-R (10 m diameter and 4 ton mass).
