Use of 2nd Order Rao-Wilton-Glisson Basis Functions to Model Scattering by Strongly Nonlinear Surfaces

Nonlinear electromagnetic scattering problems [1] are becoming relevant with the discovery of novel devices pertaining to the advances in solid state physics. Electromagnetic scattering for a certain class of 2-D devices can be modeled by solving the Time-Domain Electric Field Integral Equation (TD-EFIE) and a nonlinear resistive boundary condition (RBC). An effective strategy to alleviate the challenges posed by nonlinearity is to utilize a fine enough mesh that can capture the nonlinear dynamics in the system with sufficient accuracy. Finer meshes have the obvious drawback of increasing computation time and memory cost. This work explores the application of 2nd order Rao-Wilton-Glisson basis functions in solving the Time-Domain Electric Field Integral Equation (TD-EFIE) in conjunction with a strongly nonlinear resistive boundary condition (RBC).
