A novel correction method to improve the IR measurement accuracy of cutting tool and workpiece temperature
Accuracy measurement of cutting temperature could help to illustrate the influencing mechanisms of cutting heat on the tool wear and machined surface integrity. The infrared (IR) thermal imager is often utilized to measure cutting temperature, but the assumption of one thermal emissivity on the whole scene limits the measurement accuracy of temperature value. In this research, a novel correction method to improve the IR measurement accuracy of cutting temperature was proposed. Firstly, a fast thermal emissivity measurement method was given to determine the suitable thermal emissivity of WC/Co carbide tool and Inconel 718 workpiece. Secondly, the regions of cutting tool and workpiece are identified with an image segmentation method, which is assigned with the determined suitable thermal emissivity to obtain the temperature field. Lastly, the corrected temperature field is verified to be accurate based on the designed simulating experiments. This method could be taken as a potential to improve IR measurement accuracy of temperature in the future.
