Menopause is having a moment: power to pause?
This paper features four different women who represent different aspects of the menopausal journey. Women lose lean muscle mass and bone minerals as they age, a process that accelerates during the menopause transition, and then continues at a lower rate afterwards. The loss of muscle mass and strength can result in falls, functional decline and a subjective feeling of weakness, all of which are commonly associated with ageing and the menopause. From a metabolic, strength and functional perceptive, it is essential to health to maintain lean muscle mass across the lifespan. Research has shown that many menopausal symptoms can be improved by increasing levels of exercise and activity. As experts in movement and pelvic health, pelvic health physiotherapists are uniquely positioned to play a crucial role.
