Chronic traumatic encephalopathy is a unique neurodegenerative disease associated with exposure to repeated mild traumatic brain injury. It occurs many years after injury, develops in a small proportion of individuals, and clinically resembles "classical" neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Recently, a consensus and criteria for diagnosis of chronic traumatic encephalopathy have been developed. The authors review the current understanding of the neuropathological and clinical features of chronic traumatic encephalopathy, potential biomarkers and neuroimaging correlates, and a range of treatment options based on preclinical and clinical studies.
