BIOMASS, STORED CARBON, AND CO2 REMOVED IN A Humiriastrum procerum LITTLE FOREST IN CHOCÓ, COLOMBIA
Forest harvest biomass is a material originating from silvicultural procedures that can be quantified, managed, and utilized. This study aimed to evaluate the biomass, stored carbon, and CO2 removed by Humiriastrum procerum through its utilization in San Francisco de Ichó, in Quibdó, Chocó. For this purpose, a 2 Ha exploitation area with 10 subplots of 40 x 50m was established. The biomass, stored carbon, and CO2 removed were calculated from the harvested material. Biomass for blocks generated 10.73 t ha-1, and 27.38 t ha-1 in residues. Carbon in blocks generated 5.36 t ha-1, and 13.79 t ha-1 in residues, while CO2 removed in blocks generated 19.62 t ha-1 and 50.11 t ha-1 in residues. The presence of Humiriastrum procerum in the ecosystem shows a high volume of biomass and carbon in the products obtained (blocks), as well as in branch residues, offcuts, and small branches. It also removed high amounts of CO2, thus mitigating climate change, which should be of interest for its management and conservation.
