A Novel Cyber-Attack Detection and Mitigation for Coupled Power and Information Networks in Microgrids Using Distributed Sliding Mode Unknown Input Observer

This paper proposes a novel observer-based cyberattack-resilient control and operation method for direct current microgrids to enable cybersecurity against false data injection attacks (FDIAs). To effectively detect cyber-attacks in the communication channels and against measurement points, an advanced sliding mode observer (SMO) considering unknown inputs is developed. For this purpose, the model of each compromised distributed generation (DG) is augmented with the probable attack signals, and then, a bank of SMOs is used for each DG to estimate all neighbor units’ states. The developed attack detection and estimation tools are utilised to build a robust control and operation method resilient against cyber-attacks to mitigate the destructive effects of FDIAs. Extensive numerical real-time simulations are conducted to validate the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed method under different types of attacks and its superiority compared with other techniques.
