A Novel 16PIM Energy Modulation Method for Simultaneous Wireless Power and Data Transfer System

This article proposes a novel 16-ary pulse interval modulation (16PIM) simultaneous wireless power and data transfer (SWPDT) scheme based on series-series (SS) compensation topology. This scheme maps hexadecimal data to time intervals between adjacent pulses, enabling the transmission of 4 bits of data per modulation. Meanwhile, a single pulse modulation action lasts only half a switching cycle, significantly reducing crosstalk in power transfer. This article utilizes a semibridgeless active rectifier (S-BAR) to achieve semisynchronous rectification and reuses this circuit for pulse modulation without incurring additional hardware costs. To reduce the time measurement accuracy requirement, a synchronous modulation and demodulation method is proposed, which can be integrated into the existing microcontroller unit of the wireless power transfer system. Furthermore, this article establishes a frequency domain model to derive the soft switching conditions of the inverter and develops a complex frequency domain model to obtain the performance of data transmission. Finally, a 100 W/1 MHz SWPDT prototype is developed, achieving a data rate of 40 kbps with 94.5% power transfer efficiency. The data transmission leads to a negligible efficiency drop of less than 0.1% and a voltage fluctuation of only 0.2%, while maintaining a bit error rate (BER) below 10−6.
