Epidemiology of Pediatric Retinal Detachment and the Surgical Anatomy of Pediatric Eyes
Retinal detachment (RD) is a common cause of blindness across the adult population in comparison to the pediatric population. Pediatric retinal detachment (PRD) is a rare and compelling clinical entity and is different in comparison to adult RD, due to different etiology, anatomical features, management, and prognosis. Pediatric retinal detachments can be challenging even for expert vitreoretinal surgeons because of the higher prevalence of total retinal detachment (RD), bilateral involvement and late diagnosis. Furthermore, even if anatomical success is achieved with surgery, it is not always related to a full functional recovery. This review handles the epidemiology and surgical anatomy of pediatric retinal detachments.
