An Authenticity Study of ‘Ordering Food’ Dialogues in Korean Language Textbooks
The education of Korean as a second language has evolved in many aspects. It has shifted from grammar-centered to communication-centered education, and there are ongoing efforts to include texts that are closer to ‘reality’ in teaching materials. However, Korean language textbooks for beginners are still composed of short conversations based on learners’ proficiency levels, which can be considered far from ‘reality’. This may reflect a lack of consideration for the actual demand from foreign learners or an underestimation of learners’ cognitive abilities and reasoning skills by educators.Ordering food is a task that is essential even at the beginner level, especially for foreign students studying in Korea, as it is directly related to daily life. A foreigner who is not aware of the flow of conversation between the speaker and listener can appear rude to Koreans. This study suggests incorporating the ‘food ordering’ function into beginner textbooks based on the ‘dialogue pattern,’ a method that embodies structural reality.
