Determining Accuracy of Distance-Measurement Using UWB Transceiver on Arduino ESP32
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are widely used for various applications due to their versatility and efficiency. UAV swarms, which reduce mission completion time and increase redundancy, require precise coordination. This paper explores the possibilities of using Decawave's DWM3000 ultra-wideband (UWB) transceivers to measure distances between UAVs, crucial for collision avoidance and formation control. The UWB-technology, with its fine time-resolution and resistance to multipath interference, offers a promising solution. We conducted experiments in static and dynamic scenarios to assess measurement accuracy and reliability. The results showed consistent overestimation of distances, with higher deviations in dynamic conditions. Increased sampling rates improved measurement consistency, suggesting a potential approach for future applications. However, the high deviation in dynamic scenarios indicates the need for advanced filtering algorithms and calibration methods. Integrating UWB with GPS can leverage their complementary strengths, enhancing UAV swarm coordination.
