Enhancing Vulnerable Road Users' Safety Using Ultrasonic Sensor Device
Cycling is a globally popular mode of transportation, valued for both commuting and leisure. Despite its benefits, cycling on roads remains hazardous due to the risk of collisions with motor vehicles, especially when cars pass too closely. This research paper introduces an innovative device designed to measure the distance between a passing car and a bicycle. Utilizing a combination of sensors, cameras, software algorithms, and a GPS module, the device accurately analyzes the proximity and positions of the car and bicycle. It provides real-time information to both drivers and cyclists about their relative positions, enhancing safety through better situational awareness. The device can be integrated into existing safety systems, with the camera feature allowing cyclists to monitor approaching vehicles via a mobile application. Additionally, the paper presents experimental results evaluating the behavior of Slovak drivers concerning maintaining safe distances from cyclists.
