Miniaturized Wideband Metasurface Antenna for 5G Millimeter-Wave using Characteristic Mode Analysis

For the application of 5G millimeter-wave, a wideband miniaturized metasurface (MTS) antenna is proposed. Based on characteristic mode analysis (CMA), a V-slot unit cell is designed with an extended current path, achieving miniaturization while maintaining good dual-mode characteristics. The antenna bandwidth reaches 21.4% (31.91-39.55GHz) for |S<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">11</inf>| < –10 dB, within which gain varies from 6.3 to 7.1 dBi, It exhibits an MTS size of 0.35λ<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf>× 0.42λ<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf>, a profile of 0.097λ<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf> (where λ<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf> corresponds to the central operating frequency), providing potential array applications in compact communication devices.

Abstract

For the application of 5G millimeter-wave, a wideband miniaturized metasurface (MTS) antenna is proposed. Based on characteristic mode analysis (CMA), a V-slot unit cell is designed with an extended current path, achieving miniaturization while maintaining good dual-mode characteristics. The antenna bandwidth reaches 21.4% (31.91-39.55GHz) for |S<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">11</inf>| < –10 dB, within which gain varies from 6.3 to 7.1 dBi, It exhibits an MTS size of 0.35λ<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf>× 0.42λ<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf>, a profile of 0.097λ<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf> (where λ<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf> corresponds to the central operating frequency), providing potential array applications in compact communication devices.
