A Parallel MLFMA with Multiple Octrees for Scattering of Complex Structures

This paper presents an implementation of the parallel multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA), which is used to solve scattering problems with complex structures. Different from the parallelization of MLFMA calculating perfectly electric conducting objects, the proposed method uses multiple MLFMA trees to handle different integral equations. Furthermore, a parallelization strategy is designed for the proposed MLFMA to improve load balance and parallel efficiency on the cluster. Finally, the numerical simulation results show that the algorithm is very efficient using up to 480 CPU cores.

Abstract

This paper presents an implementation of the parallel multilevel fast multipole algorithm (MLFMA), which is used to solve scattering problems with complex structures. Different from the parallelization of MLFMA calculating perfectly electric conducting objects, the proposed method uses multiple MLFMA trees to handle different integral equations. Furthermore, a parallelization strategy is designed for the proposed MLFMA to improve load balance and parallel efficiency on the cluster. Finally, the numerical simulation results show that the algorithm is very efficient using up to 480 CPU cores.
