A 2-Bit Dual Polarized Broadband Metasurface Design for Beam Scanning
This paper develops a programmable reflective metasurface for wireless communication applications. A dual-polarized 2-bit unit cell composed of a center square patch surrounded by four trapezoidal patches is designed. By selectively switching the operation states of four PIN diodes inserted between the center patch and four trapezoidal patches, the reflection phase difference of 90° is obtained with the reflection magnitude better than -1.5 dB in the band of 4.5-5.5 GHz with a fraction bandwidth of 10%. The proposed unit cell is arranged into a 16-by-16 metasurface array. The simulation results demonstrate that when a horn antenna is adopted to illuminate the metasurace array, a wide beam scanning capability of ±50° is achieved through dynamic phase encoding manipulation within the array, providing an effective solution for wireless communication.
