Enhancement of Transmission and Absorption of Metasurfaces Using Quasi-Complementary Structure
Metasurfaces that satisfy certain response usually seems as a uniform bulk with corresponding dispersion curve of permittivity and permeability using effective medium theory (EMT). This theory provides a framework for constructing medium-type metasurfaces to achieve the targeted response. Here, we report on the discovery of a new degree of freedom termed as quasi-complementary structure, which complements effective permittivity and permeability method for the design of robust single-layer metasurface in the microwave realm. Dissatisfied with the design of uniform metasurfaces that allow electromagnetic (EM) wave to pass at low frequencies and absorbs incident energy at high frequencies as derived from EMT, our approach enhances EM performance by modifying the metasurface configuration. Simulation results indicate that the quasi-complementary metasurfaces significantly outperform traditional patched designs when employing the same magnetic materials. Our findings thus confirm a viable strategy for boosting the EM performance of metasurfaces within the microwave spectrum.
