A Compact Circularly Polarized Dielectric Resonator Antenna for Millimeter-Wave Applications
A single-fed millimeter-wave (mm-wave) circularly polarized (CP) dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) is investigated. It is designed on the substrate using a set of concentric air and metalized grooves, giving a modified z-shaped DRA. The DRA is excited by a rectangular slot etched on the ground of a second substrate. To produce CP radiation, the DRA is inclined at 45° in the horizontal plane. It has a simulated 10-dB impedance bandwidth of 9.07% (26.7–29.2 GHz) and 3-dB AR bandwidth of 6.89% (27.0–28.9 GHz), thus obtaining a CP usable bandwidth of 6.89% (27.0–28.9 GHz). Also, the DRA has a simulated peak gain of ~8.9 dBic with a low profile of 0.06λ<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf> (λ<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">0</inf> is the vacuum wavelength at center operating frequency).
